Botanicals add an interesting and unique spin to a wheat whiskey base. Flavors come through individually. I have been drinking it neat since it's 80 proof. I recommend this whiskey for it's flavor and originality.
Custom Cask 100 is pretty much my go-to sipping bourbon and rather than rehash all the 100 tasting notes, I will say the 118 has all the same notes but they're fuller and fatter. The oak and barrel char is definitely more present in the 118 but not to the detriment of the other flavors. If 100 is a walk in the woods, 118 is an old growth forest--where something has been on fire recently.
Unlike the 100, it is not a sipping bourbon. You have to set time and attention aside for it. Its flavors overpower all other food & drink while you're drinking it and for a long time after, even with a palette cleanser. Don't pair it with food or make it part of a sampling. Don't multitask with the 118. Make an appointment with this bourbon and let it do its thing.
Figured I would use this for summery, tropical G&Ts. After tasting a sample, I put it in a glencairn and drank it like whiskey. All the flavors are very distinct and fresh, not muddled together like a tropical fruit punch.
