The ground up upgrade from power cable is a good way to get the best out of one's system.
First up, thanks to Damien at Kronos AV for going the extra mile and ordering this in. Customer service at its finest, totally recommend.
I am using this CD Transport with the Pro-Ject RS2 Digital Pre (also purchased from Kronos AV) via AES-EBU out into an ATC-P2 power amp and Harbeth M30.1 speakers in a medium sized living room.
It is truly compact player, half size ‘shoe box’ dimensions, and in my opinion looks best in silver: purposeful and modern.
I am playing a lot of classical CDs via the RS2 valves and it sounds sweet enough with a good retrieval of detail, quite good pace and timing and grip, leading to a bit of toe-tapping on the sofa. All good there.
Plays all Redbook CDs, no problem, so far. This is my first slot loading player and that bit works well: firm but fair in the grabbing, hard to mess up.
Loading is best achieved as close to eye level as possible as it can get tricky to judge the exact location of the slot from a distance, above, leading to impact of disc to case. No harm done to either.
Why not 5 stars? This is a player with very little concession to its users.
The display is LARGE, cramped and bright in lowest setting. It’s like staring at a headline. It only shows Track no. and elapsed time. Nothing else. It’s BIG and can’t be turned off in use. Oh and if there is no CD, there is an annoying flashing message (curiously, this is a reasonable sized display) inviting you to insert a disc. For no apparent reason this is continuous. So switch it off. I prefer it on, tbh.
There isn’t an eject button, which is a bit annoying, but in use it’s OK once you remember the stop button ejects, once the disc itself is stopped. Unusual.
The remote is not serious. Tiny, flimsy and awkward is the best that can be said.
The 9V power input connection on the rear panel is somewhat flimsy, I replaced it immediately with a 3rd-party DC supply which improved clarity and lowered the noise floor (subjective opinion) - I advise you do too.
So it’s a good, competent player, a bit like a manual turntable, put a CD in, play it to the end. It does that really well, nice and quiet in operation, flashy display is good for that aesthetic too.
It is one of the very few CD Transports under £1k offering AES-EBU out - worth considering if you can pair it with a similarly equipped pre or DAC. HDMI out would be a good addition I think, especially as my pre has that connection available and the RS2 CD has it.
In summary, a good value Transport, sounds good but with minimal user features and a flimsy remote and power supply.
If you can live with that and you are looking for good value, then this the player for you.
